Australian Anti-Racism Kit

The Anti-Racism Kit is an educational resource developed by high-school students of colour in Australia to equip young people with practical tools for understanding and challenging racism in their daily lives. Designed as a self-guided toolkit, it addresses racism across three key domains: the Self, the School, and Society. Each section includes tailored strategies, reflective exercises, and action points to help users identify, understand, and respond to various forms of racism, whether interpersonal, institutional, or systemic.

Structure and Content

The kit is structured around three thematic sections:

  1. Self – This section supports young people in understanding their own identities and biases. It encourages critical reflection on cultural background, privilege, and experiences of racism. It includes definitions of key terms (e.g., race, racism, intersectionality), prompts for self-assessment, and strategies for developing racial literacy and empathy. The aim is to build a strong personal foundation for anti-racist thinking and action.
  2. School – The School section focuses on navigating and challenging racism within educational environments. It provides practical guidance on identifying discriminatory behaviours and policies, as well as advice on engaging teachers and school leadership in anti-racist dialogue. This section also includes scenarios and sample scripts to help students respond to racist incidents, advocate for inclusive curricula, and foster supportive peer networks.
  3. Society – In the Society section, the kit broadens its focus to systemic and structural racism in broader social and political contexts. It introduces concepts such as colonialism, media bias, and institutional discrimination, and suggests ways for young people to participate in civic engagement, advocacy, and community organising. The section highlights the importance of collective action and intergenerational dialogue in building more equitable communities.

Approach and Accessibility

The Anti-Racism Kit takes a youth-led, peer-informed approach. Its tone is accessible and its design is visually engaging, incorporating student voices and perspectives throughout. While rooted in the Australian context, it includes broader global references and examples to help users connect their experiences to wider racial justice movements.

The kit centres the voices of young people of colour, validating their experiences and promoting their leadership in anti-racism efforts. It also provides tools for allies and educators seeking to support these initiatives. Importantly, the resource avoids prescriptive or punitive approaches, instead encouraging curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking.

Intended Use

The Anti-Racism Kit is intended for use by high-school students, youth workers, educators, and community groups. It can be used independently or as part of workshops and discussions. Its flexible structure allows users to move through the content at their own pace or focus on specific areas most relevant to their context.
