Getting racism out of the classroom

The article “Getting Racism Out of the Classroom” from the University of Melbourne’s Pursuit platform discusses the prevalence of racism in Australian schools and the urgent need for systemic reform. It draws on findings from a national study involving over 1,200 students from diverse backgrounds, revealing that racism is a frequent experience for many, particularly those from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian communities.

Students reported facing verbal abuse, exclusion, and stereotyping, not only from peers but also from teachers. These experiences have significant consequences, including negative impacts on mental health, academic performance, and students’ sense of belonging within the school environment.

The article calls for comprehensive change across the education system. Key recommendations include implementing anti-racism training for educators, reforming the curriculum to better reflect diverse histories and perspectives, and establishing clear policies and accountability mechanisms to address incidents of racism effectively.
