This report presents findings from a consultation involving over 2,400 children and young people across Canberra. Led by the ACT Children and Young People Commissioner, in partnership with Curijo Pty Ltd and Multicultural Hub Canberra, the report explores how racism affects young people in everyday settings such as schools, public transport, online platforms, and sports.
Children and young people shared powerful stories of being dismissed, ignored, or even harmed by adults when reporting racism. Many expressed frustration at the silence surrounding the issue and called for more education, stronger policies, and better support systems. The report highlights the emotional toll of racism, including impacts on mental health, cultural identity, and self-esteem, while also showcasing the resilience and strength of young people in confronting these challenges.
Key recommendations include introducing explicit anti-racism education, separating racism from bullying in policies, increasing cultural representation in leadership and media, and creating safe spaces for children to speak up. The report urges the ACT Government and community to take meaningful action, guided by the voices of young people, to ensure racism is addressed and prevented across the Territory.
