Meeting the needs of children: From culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds in the context of domestic and family violence (DFV)

The Queensland DFV Roundtable Report, held on 15 December 2022, explores the unique challenges faced by children from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds affected by domestic and family violence (DFV). The roundtable brought together experts, advocates, and community leaders to amplify CALD children’s voices and inform policy development aligned with the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022–2032.

Key themes include the invisibility of CALD children in policy and service delivery, the need to centre their voices, and the cultural barriers that hinder disclosure. Participants highlighted institutional racism, lack of culturally responsive services, fragmented funding systems, and visa-related limitations as major obstacles. The report emphasises the long-term impacts of DFV on children’s mental and physical health, and the urgent need for data collection, interpreter services, and trauma-informed support.

Recommendations call for systemic reform, child-centred approaches, improved perpetrator accountability, and collaboration across health, education, and justice sectors. The insights aim to guide strategic responses and influence national and state-level frameworks to better support CALD children experiencing DFV.
