YACVIC submission: Inquiry into student pathways to in-demand industries

The Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) submission to the Inquiry into Student Pathways to In-Demand Industries outlines 18 key recommendations aimed at improving young people’s transitions from education to employment, particularly into sectors experiencing workforce shortages such as healthcare, IT, construction, and community services. The submission emphasises the importance of holistic, strengths-based support, especially for marginalised and disadvantaged youth, and highlights the unique role of youth workers in providing early intervention and personalised guidance.

YACVic advocates for embedding youth workers in schools, enhancing career education from earlier year levels, and strengthening partnerships between schools, families, and community organisations. The submission also calls for increased investment in youth work as a profession, including paid student placements and sustainable funding models. It critiques the undervaluation of vocational education and urges a shift in narrative around TAFE and apprenticeships.

Through case studies and evidence, YACVic demonstrates the social and economic value of youth work, estimating a return of $2.62 for every dollar invested. The submission concludes by urging the Victorian Government to recognise youth work as a critical in-demand industry and to ensure young people are supported by a strong, sustainable youth and community sector.
